Ferns and Palms

Beautiful, evergreen, multi-stemmed palm with feathery, arching leaves. One of the most popular houseplants and adds a tropical touch to living rooms, offices receptions and patios. Does well in bright light indoors and on patios and needs moderate watering. Benefits with occasional misting to increase humidity.

Exotic looking. Ideal for large shady areas. Magnificent in containers. This medium to large tree fern from Australia is single-stemmed, with a tall trunk and an umbrella-like crown of large fronds. Young fern leaves are rolled up and beautiful to watch unfold. Tolerates quite a bit of sun. Water often into the crown, but not into the crown during the winter. Keep soil moist. If grown indoors, ensure that it is placed in a light and airy room.

A beautiful fern with dramatic leathery and glossy foliage. Compact grower, suitable for a shady spot. Doesn't tolerate strong wind. When grown indoors ensure that it is not in a centrally heated home. It requires a light position out of direct sunlight. Can be grown in a relatively small container and should be watered  moderately.

This highly popular indoor plant showcases delicate foliage on slender, dark stems. To care for it indoors, place it in a location with indirect light, maintain consistent moisture, and consider occasional misting to provide the humidity it loves. Despite its delicate appearance, it can also thrive outdoors when placed in shaded or partially shaded areas in your garden. Not a palm, but looks like one. In fact an ancient plant from Japan and Taiwan. A lovely and very popular cycad that is often used in landscaping due to the drama and perfection that it adds to any garden. Marvelous to see the young leaves unfurl as soft and later becoming sturdy. It may flower as it gets older. There are male and female plants. The male produces a cone at the centre and the female produces a mass of orange woolly seeds after fertilisation. These lie open at the centre of the plant.  Protect this plant from the hot afternoon sun and place it in a warm, light spot.  Only feed the plant when new leaves develop. Keep the compost moist but not wet. Can be grown indoors.

An elegant and decorative palm, ideal for pool areas and small gardens. A slender medium-sized palm with a single stem that is topped with a crown of leaves that can each be up to 2.5 m long. Attractive when planted  along a driveway. Flowers in summer followed by red berry fruit. Fabulous in pots.

Long leaves unfold from the heart of the fern which is covered in chocolate coloured hairs resembling a bird's nest.  One of the best places to keep this fern is near a shower or bath where it will receive optimal humidity. It is best to keep sufficient space around the leaves as the edges are easily damaged. Can also be grown in the garden in filtered light. Do not water directly into the rosette to prevent rot. This low-maintenance beauty performs best in well-draining soil.
